Chapter 76 If Penelope were to die, he would celebrate with gongs and drums!
"What did you say?!" Zackary asked subconsciously.
Dylan still maintained his usual icy demeanor, but there was an added hint of an elder brother's worry for his younger sibling in his expression.
"Abusing your wife might bring temporary pleasure, but chasing after her will lead you to a crematorium. Zack, you'd better watch out."
"Chasing after my wife?" Zackary sneered, "If there ever comes a day when Penelope is truly sent to the crematorium, I'll beat drums and gongs in celebration!"
Back then, Zackary spoke with conviction, gritting his teeth, yet he never imagined that his words would become prophetic. Little did he know, he would soon be at the crematorium, bidding farewell to Penelope...
Lyman didn't stop until he had run all the way to the outside of Silverybay Estates villa area, dragging Penelope along with him.
The kiss just now did not affect his good mood, he still looked radiant as ever.
"Penelope, no one is disturbing us now, we can finally seal our love with a kiss!"
Penelope actually also wanted to find a quieter place to talk things over with Lyman. Now that she had come out, she didn't have to worry about her rejection causing him to lose face in public.
"Mr. Hilliard, I'm sorry, I couldn't accept you."
The expression on Lyman's face briefly froze, but in the next second, he raised a warm smile again, "Penelope, I know you don't like me, but that's okay. Once we're together, you can slowly discover my good qualities and grow to like me."
"Mr. Hilliard, I know how good you are, you are the best man I have ever met. But Mr. Hilliard, I really can't be with you, I'm not worthy of you, you deserve the best girl."
"Penelope, in my heart, only you were worthy of me!"
Penelope knew that if she simply said something about not being a good match, Lyman would definitely not give up easily. Therefore, she planned to tell him the truth.
"Mr. Hilliard, if I had a healthy body and a lifetime ahead of me, I believe I would accept you without hesitation. Even if I don't like you now, I would grow to like you eventually."
"I didn't have a healthy body, I couldn't give you a lifetime, so Mr. Hilliard, I didn't want to hold you back."
"Penelope, what do you mean by that?" Lyman asked urgently, gripping Penelope's small hand tightly.
"Mr. Hilliard, I was sick, I didn't have much time left. Meeting you was truly one of the warmest things in the end of my life, I selfishly enjoyed the warmth you gave me, but in the end, I couldn't give you anything."
"Mr. Hilliard, I couldn't be so selfish anymore, I couldn't give you the happiness you wanted, I couldn't waste your time any longer. Forget about me, go find a better girl, you're so good, you'll definitely be very happy."
"Penelope, what exactly was wrong with you?" After a very long time, Lyman asked with a trembling voice.
"Advanced stomach cancer." Penelope tried to keep her voice steady. "Mr. Hilliard, I should have told you earlier, so you wouldn't waste your time on me. But you made me feel so warm, like a father or a brother, and I selfishly wanted to enjoy a few more days of the warmth you brought me."
"But now that you know, don't waste any more time on me. Being with someone who is about to die, in the end, all you'll get is heartache and nothing else."
"Goodbye, Mr. Hilliard. I hope you never encounter such an annoying and selfish girl like me again in the future."
Having said that, Penelope slowly pried open Lyman's hand, turned around with some difficulty, and quickly walked ahead.
She had no relatives left, she truly considered Lyman as her family. In fact, she really wished to have a family member accompany her during the last period of her life. However, she felt that she was being too selfish, she couldn't just take from others without being able to give back.
"Penelope!" Lyman hurried forward, gripping Penelope's hand tightly, "I can't believe it!"
Not giving Penelope any chance to refuse, Lyman took her to the city hospital.
Penelope really didn't want to go to the hospital, she didn't like the smell of disinfectant there, but in order to make Lyman give up completely, she obediently underwent one examination after another.
Upon receiving the test results, Lyman's hands uncontrollably trembled. Several times, the examination papers almost slipped from his grasp.
A group of experts stood nervously by his side. Lyman forcefully grabbed the collar of the expert who had just spoken, "What did you say?! Repeat what you just said?!"
The expert's body shook even more violently, but he still spoke truthfully, "Mr. Hilliard, Ms. Sullivan is in the late stages of stomach cancer. She is now unable to undergo surgery, and even if she were to undergo chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other treatments, it would only add to her pain. I suggest conservative treatment, so that Ms. Sullivan's last few days of life can be a bit more comfortable."
"The last few days of life?! What do you mean by 'the last few days'?!" Lyman roared, "Explain yourself!"
The expert nervously adjusted the thick nearsighted glasses on the bridge of his nose, "Ms. Sullivan doesn't have much time left. If she's lucky, she might last half a month. If not, it could be a matter of days."
Lyman didn't want to listen to these experts' nonsense. He originally wanted to give them a good beating, but in the end, he lost all his strength and could only weakly let go of his collar.
He stood still, in a daze. For a moment, it seemed as if a natural disaster had struck. The once vibrant tree had lost all its vitality, withering and decaying.
Seeing Lyman in such a distraught state, Penelope felt a great deal of heartache. She had previously considered rejecting him outright, hoping he would give up, but he was too stubborn. Even if she rejected him, he wouldn't let go easily. She had no choice but to resort to such extreme measures.
She cleared her throat, trying to sound cheerful, "Mr. Hilliard, I didn't lie to you, did I? Forget about me, find a good girl."
The body was suddenly tightly bound, so tight that the souls of the two people were almost entwined together.
Lyman repeatedly whispered in Penelope's ear, "Penelope, I won't let go, I will not let go! Even if we were to leave this world the next second, I want to be with you in this moment!"
"Yes, we went to find Aunt Cornelia! She was an expert in this field, she must have had a way to cure you!"
Penelope gently held Lyman's hand, "Mr. Hilliard, I know my own body, and I know that no treatment will help anymore. Besides, I don't want to go to the Spencer family again. Aunt Cornelia is very nice, I like them a lot, but I don't want to see them anymore."
The people of the Spencer family were all too wonderful. The more she interacted with them, the more she was reluctant to leave.
She didn't want it that way.
Lyman didn't insist anymore. As a man of integrity, his eyes reddened, his voice softened bit by bit, "Penelope, I won't force you, I won't force you to be with me. Let's just be friends, can we be friends? Let me stay with you."
Lyman had said so, and Penelope could no longer refuse. She thought to herself, in this life, she was destined to owe him. In the next life, she would work like a horse and ox to repay him!
After the check-up, Lyman and Penelope left the hospital. Unexpectedly, a horrific car accident occurred at the hospital entrance, and the person involved in the accident was someone Penelope knew!
