Chapter 42 Her Embarrassment, Nowhere to Hide

"Mr. Spencer, please, spare me..."

Penelope's voice was hoarse and broken, like that of a dying old woman. She murmured as if in a delirium, "Spare me..."

"Penelope!"

Lyman turned the doorknob, but the door still didn't open.

He knew that the door to the men's restroom was definitely locked from the inside. He pounded on the door even harder, even kicking it several times with force.

But the quality of this bathroom door was just too good. He had already exerted all his strength to kick the door, but the tightly closed door remained completely unmoved.

Lyman was anxious. After Penelope left the box, Zackary followed closely behind. At that moment, he had a bad feeling.

After handing Ethan over to Wilton, he also left the box. He called Penelope, but no one answered. He had just asked the waitress to check the ladies' restroom for him, but she wasn't there either.

The tightly closed door of the men's restroom intensified the bad premonition in his heart.

He knew how ruthless Zackary's methods were, because of him, Zackary had always targeted Penelope. Who knew what he would do to Penelope in the men's restroom!

What if, Zackary, in order to get him, directly killed his love rival Penelope...

Lyman was as anxious as an ant on a hot pan, he felt like he was nothing less than a femme fatale bringing disaster to the country and the people!

"Zackary, I knew you were in there!"

Lyman continued to bang on the door, "Zackary, calm down! Don't hurt Penelope! Zackary, open the door for me now!"

Lyman had been knocking on the door for quite a while, but it still didn't open. He no longer had the patience to wait, so he went directly to the manager of Delight Restaurant to get the key to open the door.

The key was not with the hotel manager. By the time the key was obtained, after much back and forth, more than half an hour had already passed.

Lyman held the key tightly in his hand, his palm unconsciously damp with sweat. He was truly afraid that upon opening the bathroom door, he would see Penelope's corpse.

He clenched the key, just about to open the door, when the door of the men's restroom was suddenly flung open from the inside.

Before he could react, Zackary, impeccably dressed and unparalleled in elegance, had already emerged from the men's restroom.

And Penelope, trembling, curled up in the corner of the wall, in a state of disarray.

"Penelope!"

Lyman rushed in quickly, the clothes on Penelope were not as badly torn as before at the Horse House, but the obvious signs of tearing could still be seen.

Seeing the shocking red marks on her exposed skin, even though Lyman had never had a girlfriend, he knew what had happened in the bathroom just now.

Hearing Lyman's voice, Penelope numbly lifted her face, having been forcefully bumped into by Zackary, she felt an indescribable embarrassment in her heart.

But at the same time, she was secretly relieved that Ethan had not come with Lyman.

Looking into Lyman's eyes, stained with a crimson hue of blood, Penelope turned her face away in panic. Now, she didn't know how to face him.

She really liked her friend Lyman. Sometimes, she would involuntarily regard him as family. Thinking about how much he would despise and look down on her in the future, her numb heart began to ache again.

Before, she had lost all her dignity in front of Zackary for the sake of making money. However, in front of the people she cared about the most, such as Ethan, Corona, Kemp, and now Lyman, she hoped she could still retain some dignity.

"Penelope, I'm sorry, I was late!"

Lyman took off his own coat and carefully wrapped it around Penelope. Thinking of Zackary's misdeeds, he gritted his teeth in anger, "That beast Zackary! I'll kill him!"

Having said that, Lyman turned around, carrying a body full of anger, and stormed out towards the bathroom.

"Mr. Hilliard......"

Penelope spoke softly, "I need a favor from you, please take Ethan back. I don't want him to see me like this."

A pang shot through Lyman's heart, he spun around abruptly and pulled Penelope tightly into his arms.

There was no ambiguity between men and women, only the heartache and worry typical of family members.

"Penelope, I'm sorry, I'm sorry..." Lyman muttered over and over again. He was always carefree, but in that moment, he was in excruciating pain.

He felt heartache for the woman in his arms.

Penelope was taken aback. She had thought that Lyman, seeing her in such a disheveled state, would look down on her, disdainfully cast her aside. She never imagined that he would repeatedly apologize to her, and hold her so preciously in his arms.

"Penelope, I was going to have someone take Ethan back to the hospital."

Lyman gently cradled Penelope in his arms, as if holding a delicate porcelain doll, "Penelope, I'll take you home."

Penelope felt that she had already troubled Lyman too much and didn't want to bother him anymore. However, she had to admit, him driving her home would be much more convenient than her taking a taxi in her current state.

She didn't refuse any longer, instead, she let him carry her to his car.

Penelope had a father, but she never experienced paternal love from childhood to adulthood.

All the love of the Sullivan family's parents was given to Lola.

She really didn't understand why her biological parents would shower Lola with love, yet despise her in every possible way.

She had always thought that she would never again enjoy the kind of affection akin to that of a father or an elder brother. But, strangely enough, as she nestled in Lyman's arms, she felt that the affection she had always lacked and yearned for was suddenly fulfilled in an instant.

Tonight, the scene of being bumped into by Lyman was really embarrassing. After getting in the car, Penelope really didn't know what to say to him.

It seemed that no matter what was said, it was impossible to sweep away the embarrassment and awkwardness in the heart.

Lyman had also remained silent, his usually charming baby face unusually devoid of smiles, filled only with intense anger and heaviness.

Just when she thought he would remain silent, he suddenly spoke, "Penelope, let's get married!"

Penelope lifted her face in disbelief, she had never imagined that Lyman would suddenly propose to her.

Penelope didn't want to reopen old wounds, but at this point, she felt that there were some things she had to make clear to Lyman.

"Mr. Hilliard, I couldn't be with you. I..."

"Penelope, don't tell me again that you're not good enough for me, that I deserve a better girl!" Lyman interrupted Penelope's words passionately, "I've told you, in my heart, you are the best girl!"

"No matter if you were married, had children, or were bullied, in my heart, you will always be the purest and cleanest Penelope! Penelope, marry me! Let me take care of you, protect you, shield you from the wind and rain, alright?"

"Mr. Hilliard, I couldn't be with you."

Penelope paused, then spoke, "Mr. Hilliard, do you know who my ex-husband is? My ex-husband is Zackary!"
