Chapter 56 Ethan, Torn to Pieces!
Corona was worried about Penelope's condition. She had intended to take a leave of absence to stay with her at the Horse House.
But Nora was like a piece of toffee, she found Horse House early in the morning, scolding and forcing her to go to work.
She didn't want Penelope, who was already so upset, to be further distressed because of the Nora incident. In the end, she decided to go to work first.
As soon as Corona left, Lola came over here with a box in her hands.
Just now, Nora had hurriedly left with Corona, not being kind enough to close the door for Penelope. Penelope, currently in a state of shock, naturally didn't think to close the door either. This conveniently allowed Lola to walk right in.
The apartment of Horse House was a duplex, and Penelope was not downstairs, but in Ethan's room upstairs.
As soon as Lola pushed open the door, she saw Penelope huddled in the corner, looking disheveled.
The wound on Penelope's forehead had been hastily treated by Corona, but she was still covered in quite a bit of blood. She hadn't changed her clothes, and at this moment, she looked as disheveled as one could possibly be.
Upon seeing Penelope like this, the corners of Lola's lips uncontrollably lifted.
But remembering the purpose of her visit today, Lola swallowed her pride and forced herself to put on a sad face.
She clutched the box in her hands, strutting in her high heels, full of grace and charm.
"Sister, how did you manage to get yourself into such a mess in just one day!"
Lola sauntered over to Penelope, looking down at her condescendingly, as if she were a mere ant.
"Sister, I know something happened to Ethan and you're upset, but your health is the most important thing. If you ruin your health, it's a lifetime matter! Zackary and I, we're both upset for you!"
Penelope was terribly upset. She didn't want to deal with Lola, so she coldly ordered her to leave. "Lola, get out! You're not welcome here!"
"Don't welcome me?" Lola didn't get angry, her voice sounded even gentler, "Sister, if you don't welcome me, does that mean you don't welcome your Ethan either?!"
Penelope keenly perceived the hidden meaning in Lola's words. Just as she was about to question her about it, Lola handed her the box she was holding.
"Sister, I brought Ethan back to you!"
Upon hearing Lola's words, Penelope abruptly grabbed the box from her hands, only to find that the box was terrifyingly light.
The box was not small, but if Ethan was inside, it definitely couldn't be as light as a piece of paper!
Lola was messing with her!
Seemingly seeing through Penelope's thoughts, Lola maliciously curled her lips, "Sister, do you think that Ethan can't fit in this box, and I'm just playing you?"
"Sister, I swear to God, I really didn't trick you! Inside this, absolutely, is your Ethan! However, it's not his corpse, nor his ashes, but..."
In the midst of speaking, Lola had already opened the box, which contained several pieces of shattered, blood-stained cloth.
That fabric, Penelope recognized, it was from the clothes Ethan was wearing when he was thrown off the cliff.
Penelope's hand trembled as she tried to pick up those pieces of fabric, wanting to feel Ethan's warmth again. But she didn't know what was wrong with her. They were just a few pieces of fabric, light as a feather, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't pick them up.
Lola's voice continued, "Sister, do you know why I couldn't bring you Ethan's body, or his ashes, but could only bring you these few pieces of torn cloth?!"
"Because, Ethan had already been eaten by the beast beneath the cliff, swallowed whole, his body torn apart. Zackary was afraid that you wouldn't be able to bear seeing those few bloody pieces of flesh, so he only let me bring you these pieces of cloth."
"Lola, what did you say?!" Penelope abruptly lifted her face, staring at Lola in shock as if she had been struck by lightning.
She had known for a long time that falling into that abyss, her Ethan wouldn't have survived. But thinking about it was one thing, actually hearing the news of his death was another.
A thousand arrows through the heart could not compare to a fraction of the pain she felt at that moment.
"I said..."
Thinking back to when she had arrived at the cliff bottom by helicopter and saw Zackary, his eyes red and his demeanor distraught, Lola's voice involuntarily took on a chilling hint of hatred.
"I said, your Ethan is already dead, torn apart and eaten by the beasts beneath the cliff. You won't even be able to see his intact body!"
"On these pieces of cloth, it's all his blood, all your Ethan's blood. He can't come back, he can never come back!"
"Sister, being eaten by a beast is not a pleasant experience. Tell me, if Ethan had a breath left after falling off the cliff, and he was eaten bit by bit, do you think he would feel a lot of pain?"
"Was it a beast that ate Ethan, or a pack of them? Did they start by eating his hands, or his feet, or did they just bite off his head directly?!"
"Ah ah ah!"
Hearing this, Penelope could no longer control herself. She grabbed a cup from the table beside her and fiercely threw it at Lola.
"Lola, get out!"
The cup didn't hit Lola, but fell to the ground beside her, making a crisp sound.
Looking at the shattered glass cup all over the floor, the smile on Lola's face became even more sinister.
She took a step forward, a malicious red mist swirling in her eyes, "Sister, when Ethan's funeral comes, don't forget to let me know. After all, he did call me auntie once."
"Get out!"
Penelope directly smashed a nearby chair onto Lola.
This time, Lola didn't manage to dodge. The chair hit her, causing a lot of pain. However, because she was feeling so elated, she didn't pick a fight with Penelope.
She came over today specifically to confront Penelope. Now that she has achieved more than she intended, she won't continue this fight.
She slowly withdrew her gaze from the ragged cloth inside that box, that bastard had finally died, and good riddance!
With a hearty laugh to the sky, Lola left Horse House in high spirits.
After Lola left, Penelope could no longer control the fragility in her heart.
She clung tightly to the paper box in her hands. After holding it for a while, she mustered all her strength to grab the few blood-stained cloths inside the box.
On the cloth, it seemed as if Ethan's body heat still lingered. She clung desperately to those pieces of fabric, pressing them against her chest, crying out in a hoarse, mournful wail.
"Ethan... my Ethan..."
After Ethan was thrown off the cliff, Penelope's health deteriorated even more, but she still managed to hold a simple funeral for Ethan.
She left a vacant space next to Ethan's tomb, so that when she died, she could be buried beside him.
After the funeral, Penelope returned to Horse House. She wanted to properly sort out Ethan's belongings so that when her time came, she could be buried with them.
While she was sorting through Ethan's belongings, she found a delicate black box.
