Chapter 6
The next day, Alexander still hadn't come back. I packed up all my belongings and donated them.
The marriage certificate I once cherished so much? I tore it into pieces and threw it in the trash.
By the third day, at noon, Alexander sent me a SnapChat message:
"Olivia, I'm done with work. I'm heading to the hotel to check on the venue setup. My assistant will pick you up in the afternoon."
But in reality, he was holding Sophia's hand, carrying Andy in his arms, and shopping at jewelry stores in the mall.
They were drawing envious glances and receiving blessings from the store staff.
"Mr. Carter really dotes on his wife and child. My sales target for the next twenty years is already met! What a beautiful family!"
"But I heard Mr. Carter booked the cheapest banquet package at the hotel today. Isn't that supposed to be a celebration for his wife giving birth?"
"You must be mistaken. With how generous Mr. Carter is with his wife, how could he book something so cheap? Did you see that necklace Mrs. Carter is wearing? Mr. Carter just bought it for her this morning. It's worth more than ten of those banquet packages."
I was watching all of this from the upper floor, where I had just finished buying a suitcase.
I didn't respond to his message. Instead, I had the divorce agreement and some important documents sent to the banquet venue by a local courier.
Afterward, I put on my sunglasses and headed straight for the airport.
Hours later, after finishing his shopping spree with Sophia and Andy, Alexander arrived at the hotel. But he was told that I hadn't shown up yet.
He checked the time, it was already an hour past our agreed meeting time. That struck him as odd since I'd never been late for anything before.
Just as he was about to call, his assistant rushed in, panicked.
"Mr. Carter, something terrible has happened. Mrs. Carter has disappeared. Someone just delivered these."
The assistant handed him a set of documents. When Alexander saw the divorce agreement, his heart skipped a beat. Olivia wanted a divorce?
How could this be?
Along with the divorce papers was a USB drive. Alexander ordered his assistant to quickly play whatever was on it.
But the assistant, flustered from rushing, hadn't brought a laptop. The only place they could plug in the USB was the big screen at the venue, but with so many guests around...
Sophia noticed the commotion and walked over, holding Andy.
"Alex, what's going on? Andy's been fussing for a while now. He must want you to hold him. Come, take him."
But Alexander barely noticed. He shouted at the assistant:
"What are you waiting for? Play it now!"
The sudden shout startled Andy, who began crying loudly. Sophia tried to comfort him, shooting Alexander a disapproving look.
At that moment, Alexander didn't even seem to notice her. His eyes were fixed on the big screen, waiting for the video to play.
The screen lit up, and a series of video clips began.
There was the conversation between Alexander and the doctor in the morgue, the truth about Olivia being pushed down the stairs, and even intimate moments between him and Sophia at the old house.
Alexander's face drained of color as he watched, his body trembling uncontrollably.
