Chapter 4
Lucas finally seemed to grasp the gravity of the situation, his face draining of color as he rushed to the hospital. My heart raced as I followed them, feeling as though I were a mere shadow.
Once we arrived at the hospital, Mrs. Sinclair wasted no time in confronting Lucas, her anger boiling over as she pointed a trembling finger at his chest, scolding him mercilessly.
Zoe tried to step in, defending Lucas, but Mrs. Sinclair shot her down with a sharp retort, her eyes filled with disdain.
"Where's Ava?" Mrs. Sinclair's voice was tight with frustration. It seemed she couldn't reach me either. Seeing Zoe standing behind Lucas only seemed to make her more agitated.
Lucas, on the other hand, let out a bitter laugh.
"Ava Bennett? She's the ungrateful one. To avoid divorcing me, she's even abandoned her own mother."
The words stung, but I couldn't speak. I could only float to the side, desperately trying to refute the lies, my soul aching with every passing moment. Why was I still lingering in this world?
Mrs. Sinclair was so enraged she almost raised her hand to slap Lucas, but before she could, a young doctor burst into the room, interrupting the tense scene.
"Excuse me, are you Ava Bennett's family?"
Lucas frowned in confusion but nodded in response.
"Yes, we are. What's going on?"
The doctor's voice was soft but heavy with sorrow.
"Miss Ava Bennett passed away from cancer yesterday morning. My colleague said her mother is hospitalized here, and we need the family to come collect the body."
Lucas stood frozen for a moment, as if the words hadn't quite registered. But when they did, he scoffed, his tone still harsh.
"I saw her just a month ago. Now you're telling me she's dead? This is impossible."
He glanced around the room, his voice rising in anger. "I don't understand why you all would help her deceive me like this. Where's Ava? Bring her out now, or I'll make you all pay!"
The doctor's expression shifted to one of frustration, though he remained calm.
"Sir, if you don't believe me, you can go downstairs to the morgue. Ava Bennett's body is there."
The room went still, the tension thick in the air. Lucas, visibly shaken for the first time, stood motionless, staring at the doctor. Then, with a mix of disbelief and panic, he released Zoe's hand and turned, rushing toward the stairs, leaving her standing there in stunned silence.
I was drawn by his back, following all the way to the basement.
The closer he got to the morgue, the slower Lucas's steps became.
But no matter how much he resisted, my body was lying peacefully inside.
Lucas walked to my body, lifted the white cloth, revealing my pale face.
This was also the first time I saw my own corpse since I died.
To be honest, the state of death was not peaceful.
The body tormented by illness, sparse and dry hair, sunken eye sockets.
Lucas instinctively took a step back, his whole body trembling slightly.
Seeing this, I actually wanted to laugh.
No matter how much he despised me, he would still fear my corpse.
His gaze fixed on the scar on my right shoulder, left from that kidnapping. He couldn't possibly mistake it.
This time he wouldn't doubt that I was using someone else's body to deceive him, right?
"Impossible, Ava Bennett, you liar, you can't be dead."
Lucas muttered, his eyes hiding undisguised panic.
But at this point, he had no choice but to believe it.
He stared at my body, frozen in place.
I floated in the air, coldly watching everything happening in the morgue.
At this time, Zoe also followed in, seeing my body lying there, the smile at the corners of her mouth couldn't be hidden.
Perhaps the only happy person present was Zoe.
I was dead, she could finally rightfully marry Lucas.
She looked from afar, but didn't dare to come closer.
Lucas heard the sound and suddenly turned around, his eyes meeting Zoe's.
But Zoe was too elated and didn't have time to hide the expression on her face, which was all seen by Lucas.
Perhaps it was because this joy was so out of place in the morgue's atmosphere, Lucas's face darkened.
"Zoe, seeing a dead person makes you so happy?"
