Chapter 10
I stared out the window, fingers tracing the delicate embroidery on my gown. Sunlight filtered through the leaves outside, casting soft, intricate patterns across the floor of my room. I'd tried to convince myself that this mateship was nothing more than an alliance, a necessary step for my bloodline, a safeguard for my future stability. But lately, that resolve had been slipping.
Fragments of conversations with my father replayed in my mind: his praise for this Alpha, his insistence on the Alpha's strength and his understanding of our bloodline. Even the way my mother's voice softened when she mentioned him stirred something in me, a spark of curiosity that only seemed to grow.
A knock broke my thoughts, and my mother entered, her footsteps light against the wooden floor. She gave me that warm, familiar smile, and I could tell she saw right through me.
"Darling," she said, her voice tender yet knowing, "lost in thought, are we?"
I blinked, snapping out of my reverie, and managed a small smile. "I suppose I am," I murmured, my voice barely above a whisper.
She crossed the room and sat beside me with the same grace I'd admired my entire life. Her hand brushed a loose strand of hair from my face. "I've been waiting for this moment," she said softly. "To see you so close to being... safe. You don't know how much peace that gives me."
"Safe," I echoed, the word feeling foreign on my lips. Safety had never been something I truly knew. My wolf, my blood, they were wild and unpredictable, more of a threat to myself than anyone else. The idea of peace, of balance, was both a strange and tempting notion.
"Yes," she said, squeezing my hand gently. "Your father and I would never have agreed to this mateship if we didn't believe it was the right choice for you."
Her words settled over me like a heavy blanket, grounding me yet filling me with uncertainty. I lowered my gaze. "And you're sure… this Alpha will understand?" My voice was small, hesitant. Could this truly be real?
She smiled, her conviction unwavering. "More than anyone. He's the only one who can. We've searched for years, Malinda. Your father and I didn't rest until we found the best match for you. And this man..." Her gaze drifted for a moment, thoughtful. "He's unlike anyone we've ever met. The moment we saw him, we knew."
Her certainty sent a chill down my spine. My parents loved me fiercely, and I knew they would do anything to protect me. But hearing my mother speak with such unwavering confidence about a stranger, this Alpha, comforted me and made me uneasy all at once.
"What makes him so different?" I asked, my curiosity creeping into my voice.
Her eyes met mine, calm and steady. "He understands the power that runs through our family, our bloodline. He has his own strength, something rare, something your father recognized immediately. Your father believes this Alpha can balance even the strongest Lycan blood."
My heart quickened, and I felt my wolf stir within me, restless and alert. Her words sparked something deep inside, a longing I'd buried for so long. Could this man really be the one to anchor me, to calm the wildness that had plagued me for years?
"I never thought..." I hesitated, a knot forming in my chest. "I never thought anyone could be strong enough. All my life, I've struggled with my own blood, my own power. It's hard to believe anyone could... tame it."
My mother's hand rested gently on my shoulder. "He won't tame it, Malinda. He'll balance it. There's a difference."
Her words struck a chord deep within me. I had spent my life preparing to carry this strength alone, shouldering this power without help. The idea that someone might be able to share that weight, even lessen it, felt almost too much to hope for.
A flicker of hope ignited inside me, mixing with the curiosity I couldn't hold back.
"And you're sure?" My voice was barely a whisper, filled with doubts and fears. "You're sure he's the one?"
Her gaze softened, filled with a certainty I desperately wanted to believe. "I am more certain of this than anything else," she replied, her voice steady and resolute. "We didn't choose him lightly, Malinda. He isn't just strong, he understands you, even if he doesn't know it yet."
Her words left me reeling. My father's confidence, my mother's quiet faith, they spoke of something I couldn't yet see. Was this Alpha truly the answer to everything I had struggled with for so long?
"Then, Mother," I said finally, my voice trembling with a mix of fear and anticipation, "who is he? Who is this Alpha who's supposed to be my mate?"
